The province of Chieti is located in central-southern Italy, in Abruzzo.
With a population of approximately 370,000, its territory is characterized by a great variety of landscapes, ranging from mountains to the sandy shores of the Adriatic Sea.
The province of Chieti is rich in historical and cultural sites.
For example, the city of Chieti, the provincial capital, is an important historical center with a long history dating back to the Roman era.
Among its most significant monuments are the Roman Theater, the Arch of Trajan, and the Cathedral of San Giustino.
Additionally, Vasto, a charming town in the province, contributes to the cultural richness.
Vasto is renowned for its historical significance and is our base and the starting point for many of our tours.
With its picturesque streets and historical landmarks, including the Castello Caldoresco and the Cathedral of San Giuseppe, Vasto adds a distinctive flavor to the cultural tapestry of the region.
Other not-to-be-missed places include the Majella National Park: one of Italy’s most beautiful protected areas, with breathtaking landscapes, waterfalls, and caves; the medieval villages, small gems waiting to be discovered, and the Trabocchi Coast, the picturesque Abruzzo coast with its “trabocchi” – ancient wooden structures used for fishing – is ideal for romantic walks and breathtaking views of the Adriatic Sea.
The province of Chieti offers a variety of activities.
Nature lovers can explore national parks and nature reserves, such as the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve, which offers panoramic trails, pristine beaches, and a variety of flora and fauna.
Hiking, mountain biking, or simply relaxing in nature are all options.
Tourists interested in history and culture can visit the cities and villages of the province, which host museums, churches, and other historical sites.
The province of Chieti is a land rich in culinary traditions.
Typical dishes are based on local products, such as homemade pasta, cheeses, meats, and fish.
Among the most famous dishes are: Pasta alla chitarra, Ventricina, Brodetto di pesce, Scrippelle, Arrosticini, Montepulciano d’Abruzzo.
The temperatures vary seasonally.
In summer, enjoy sunny days with temperatures around 75-85°F (24-29°C), while in winter, it may snow, especially in higher areas.

Ciao Fabrizio
My grandfather, my mother’s father, was born in Pianella Pescara. I along with my 2 adult children and 2 grandchildren have recently obtained our dual citizenship through my deceased grandfather, who was not naturalized in the U. S. prior to his death.
I look forward to visiting Pescara for an extended stay some time in the next few years, and I hope to use you as a resource.
Incidentally, I came upon your site by searching for a calzonetti recipe. Your recipe brought back many fond Christmas memories. My mother also made struffoli, bows, zeppole stuffed with bacala, and “S” cookies. I’ve often wondered if all these Christmas traditions originated in Abruzzo or or in Avvelino where my mother’s mother was from.
Stai bene

Ciao Charlie,
thank you so much for your loving message and for sharing your story.
I am glad that the caggionetti (calchoons) recipe brought back good Christmas memories for you and that you are continuing to pass on these traditions to your family, carrying on this connection with your Abruzzo roots.
We look forward to seeing you soon in Abruzzo, and I am sure it will be a memorable trip for you and your family.
Ciao for now
Fabrizio
