When you picture traveling to Italy, what do you see? Is it rushing through crowded monuments behind a tour leader holding a raised flag? Or is it sitting around a long wooden table under a grape arbor, laughing over a glass of homemade wine, dusting flour off your hands after learning to roll fresh pasta with local grandmothers?
I’m Fabrizio Lucci, founder and host at Italia Sweet Italia. Over 15 years ago, I started organizing these experiential tours because I wanted to show travelers the real, unhurried Italy, the one I grew up in. The inspiration behind our company name comes from the age-old phrase “Home Sweet Home.” My team, my family, and I have made it our mission to transform your journey into an extension of home, where you stop being a tourist and instantly become part of an extended Italian family.
“Vasto with Fabrizio was more of a family reunion than a guided tour. Having traveled Italy throughout the years has been one of my life’s pleasures, but this trip was the trip my heart was waiting for.” — Mary, USA
1. The heart of slow travel: human connection and local life
True travel is measured not by checking famous landmarks off a list, but by the depth of the connections you make along the way. For over fifteen years, our regenerative approach to slow travel has rested on three core pillars:
- Authentic Human Connections: Our itineraries are woven from real-life encounters. You won’t just observe local traditions; you’ll participate in them. From hands-on pasta-making classes with my Mamma Anna Maria and cousin Rosa to creative afternoons at Ettore and Barbara’s hilltop art farm in Lentella, every moment is crafted to foster genuine warmth.
- Supporting Local Micro-Economies: We deliberately bypass large corporate chains. Instead, we partner directly with small-scale winemakers (like our friends at Fontefico), olive oil producers, cheese artisans, and family-run trattorias. This ensures that your journey directly enriches the host communities that welcome us.
- The Luxury of Unhurried Time: We invite you to slow down. Our journeys immerse you in the relaxed rhythm of the Italian countryside, where well-being is a daily ritual—whether that means enjoying a fresh gelato along Vasto’s Adriatic promenade or savoring a seafood lunch on an ancient trabocco fishing platform.
A Mini-Glossary of Abruzzese Delights
- Cerasuolo d’Abruzzo: A world-class rosé wine made from Montepulciano grapes. Its vibrant ruby-pink color takes its name from cerase, our local word for cherries.
- Caciocavallo: An iconic stretched-curd cheese of Southern Italy, stretched by hand and aged in pairs, pairing magnificently with a glass of robust red wine.
- Arrosticini: Traditional sheep skewers grilled over an open flame, historically prepared by shepherds migrating their flocks from the Apennine mountains down to the sea.
“Fabrizio’s tour of his home region was exceptional… I truly felt immersed in the culture and delighted by learning how to make the local pasta, bread, and cheese, all taught by Fabrizio’s family and friends.” — Edie B.
2. The local market experience: a healthier, mindful way of living
When we visit Vasto’s historic covered market together, we aren’t just picking up ingredients for dinner; we are stepping into a vibrant lifestyle centered around health, sustainability, and community. In a world increasingly dominated by ultra-processed foods, our market visits reflect four vital principles:
- Nourishing Your Health: Enjoying fresh, chemical-free, seasonal produce directly from local growers.
- Environmental Sustainability: Embracing “Zero-Kilometer” (0 km) eating that respects the natural cycle of our land.
- Supporting Family Farmers: Helping local vendors and micro-producers thrive against corporate conglomerates.
- Social Well-being: Building real human connections and sharing daily life with local vendors who quickly become friends.

3. Agility, comfort and intimacy: small groups of max 12 guests
If you’ve ever been stuck on a 50-passenger tour bus, you know the limitations: long wait times, rigid schedules, and an inability to access authentic, off-the-beaten-path locations. To keep our experiences personal, relaxed, and high-quality, we strictly limit our groups to a maximum of 12 participants. We travel exclusively in small, comfortable, modern minivans driven by dedicated local drivers like Antonio, Riccardo, and Loris:
- Exclusive Access: Our small vehicles easily navigate the narrow, winding roads leading to medieval hilltop towns (borghi) like Scanno, Roccascalegna and Sulmona.
- Ethical Community Impact: Choosing independent local drivers directly supports families within our region.
- Camaraderie of Like-Minded Travelers: Small groups foster natural friendships, bound by shared laughter and unforgettable meals.
4. Worry-free logistics: seamless pickups and 15+ years of experience
We know that international travel can bring anxiety, especially regarding airport pickups, navigation, and timing. With over 15 years of experience perfecting these itineraries, we have built a seamless system designed to put your mind completely at ease:
- Stress-Free Airport Transfer: Our primary pickup point is at Rome Fiumicino Airport (FCO) on Sunday afternoons (usually after 12:30 PM). Well before your trip, we provide full pickup details, exact meeting locations, and driver photos.
- Pro Tip for Jet Lag: We always recommend arriving in Rome 1 or 2 days early to rest and avoid transatlantic flight delay stress.
- Private Online Communities: Join our private Facebook and WhatsApp groups before you travel to connect with past guests and coordinate details.
5. Solo Travelers, special diets and reconnecting with your roots
Whether you are traveling on your own or managing health requirements, we take personal responsibility for your care:
- Safe, Walkable Bases: Our main base town of Vasto is a safe, peaceful seaside town perched on a cliff overlooking the Adriatic.
- Single-Friendly Approach: In Abruzzo, we work hard to minimize or eliminate single supplements.
- Dietary Peace of Mind: Celiac, vegetarian, vegan, or pescatarian? Your dietary needs are handled with meticulous care by our cooks.
- Ancestry & Heritage Research: My colleague Antonio specializes in genealogy, helping guests visit their ancestors’ hometowns.
“I identified a food intolerance to Fabrizio before the trip and at each meal I was told which dishes I could eat, and if I could not partake in a specific course something special was made just for me.” — Rebecca S.
