The Spirit of Carnival in Abruzzo

Like in many parts of Italy, Carnival (Carnevale) in Abruzzo is a lively celebration leading up to Lent, a time of festivity before the fasting and reflection of the Christian calendar.

Every town and village adds its own unique flair to the celebration, with grand processions of allegorical floats (carri allegorici), masked performers, and lively street parties.

One of the most famous Carnival events in the region is held in Francavilla al Mare, where impressive floats, elaborate costumes, and street performers turn the town into an open-air theatre of fun and fantasy.

Towns like Vasto, Teramo, and L’Aquila also offer their own enchanting celebrations, often rooted in deep historical traditions.

Beyond the major cities, several smaller towns and villages preserve unique Carnival traditions:

  • Francavilla al Mare – Carnival of Abruzzo: The most famous Carnival in the region, reaching its 70th edition in 2025, featuring grand parades, artistic performances, and street entertainment.
  • Montorio al Vomano – “The Death of Carnival”: A satirical event where the festival concludes with an ironic and theatrical funeral for Carnival itself.
  • Ortona and Vasto: Coastal towns with vibrant parades, group masquerades, and gastronomic fairs.
  • Schiavi d’Abruzzo – The Mazzaroni: A distinctive celebration where masked figures, called Mazzaroni, wear extravagant costumes with decorated hats, representing ancient rural characters in a lively folk parade.
  • Cupello and Scerni: Small towns where Carnival is a community affair, featuring local parades and abundant traditional food.

A Culinary Extravaganza

No Italian festival is complete without food
, and Carnival in Abruzzo is no exception.

This season is all about indulging in rich, traditional delicacies before the restrictions of Lent begin.

From sweet pastries to unique local specialties, the region offers an array of flavors that embody its culinary heritage.

  • Ravioli Dolci di Ricotta (Sweet Ricotta Ravioli) – A delightful twist on classic ravioli, these sweet treats are filled with ricotta cheese, sugar, and a hint of lemon zest. Unlike their savory counterpart, these ravioli are often baked or fried and dusted with powdered sugar, making them a beloved Carnival specialty. Their rich yet delicate taste offers a perfect balance between tradition and indulgence.
  • Cicerchiata (Honey-Coated Fried Dough Balls) – This iconic Abruzzese dessert consists of small, golden dough balls, fried to perfection and bound together with honey to form a wreath or pyramid shape. Crunchy on the outside and sweetly sticky inside, it’s a must-have treat during the festivities.
  • Frappe (or Chiacchiere) – Crispy Carnival Pastries – Light and crispy, these thin, ribbon-like pastries are fried and sprinkled with powdered sugar. Found throughout Italy under different names, in Abruzzo they are a Carnival essential, pairing wonderfully with a glass of local sweet wine.
  • Castagnole (Carnival Dough Balls) – These small, deep-fried dough balls are golden and crispy on the outside, soft and airy on the inside. Often filled with custard, chocolate, or ricotta, they provide a delicious burst of flavor in every bite and are a staple of Abruzzo’s Carnival celebrations.

Each of these delicacies represents the spirit of Carnival in Abruzzo—joyful, rich, and deeply rooted in tradition.

Whether enjoyed at a local bakery, a festive street market, or homemade in a family kitchen, these flavors capture the essence of celebration in the region.
