The hidden postcard of Abruzzo: why Punta Aderci feels like home to me

Reading Time: 7 minutes

Whenever I need a quiet moment before welcoming one of our small groups, I often find myself drawn to the Punta Aderci Nature Reserve in Vasto area. Standing on those cliffs high above the Adriatic always reminds me why I love sharing Abruzzo with travelers from around the world. For me, Punta Aderci is also especially meaningful because it is so close to home, just a 15-minute bike ride away.

Punta Aderci is much more than just another stop on an itinerary. It is one of those special places that captures the very essence of Abruzzo: wild, authentic, and beautifully removed from the crowds that fill many of Italy’s better-known destinations. It is no surprise that National Geographic listed Punta Aderci among the 12 best beaches in the world in 2022, a recognition that reflects its extraordinary natural beauty and unique character.

If you have ever dreamed of discovering a quieter side of Italy, one where life still moves at a gentler pace, I invite you to take a journey with me through one of my favorite corners of the Adriatic coast.

Over the years, many of our guests have told me that traveling with us feels less like joining a tour and more like spending time with old friends. That sense of connection and shared discovery is something I treasure deeply, and Punta Aderci has become one of the places our travelers remember most fondly.

If you would like a more personal explanation from the place itself, I invite you to watch the final video, where I take you on site and share the story of Punta Aderci directly from the reserve.

The “Postcard of Abruzzo” in a single view

Whenever we stop here with our guests, I always encourage them to pause for a moment and simply take in the view. Punta Aderci is what I like to call the “Postcard of Abruzzo” because it captures so much of our region’s beauty in one breathtaking panorama.

A protected landscape with a quiet history

Few visitors realize that Punta Aderci was the first protected coastal reserve established in Abruzzo. It was created to preserve this extraordinary stretch of coastline while allowing people to enjoy its natural beauty in a sustainable way. Stretching from Punta Penna Beach to the mouth of the Sinello River, it remains a place where nature, agriculture, and the sea coexist in remarkable harmony.

Even today, this balance is visible everywhere: vineyards, olive groves, wheat fields, and quiet beaches still shape a landscape that feels deeply authentic and largely unchanged over time.

Visitors can experience the reserve in a variety of low-impact ways, whether walking along its scenic trails, exploring with their four-legged companions, cycling through the countryside, or even discovering the area on horseback. These activities encourage a form of tourism that is sustainable, respectful of the environment, and fully in harmony with the spirit of the reserve.

In fact, during all of our tours we include a short walk inside the reserve, allowing guests to experience its beauty up close. The only exception is our dedicated walking tour, where we spend two to three hours fully immersed in the natural landscape, exploring the area in depth and taking in its full variety of scenery

Where mountains meet the sea

One of the things that surprises visitors most is the incredible contrast between sea and mountains.

Imagine swimming in the crystal-clear waters of the Adriatic while gazing toward the majestic peaks of the Maiella and Gran Sasso mountains. In winter and early spring, those mountains are often covered with snow, creating a view that feels almost unreal.

The experience works both ways. When you are hiking in the mountains of Abruzzo on a clear day, you can often look out toward the horizon and glimpse the sea below. This balance between coastline and mountains is one of the reasons I believe Abruzzo is unlike any other region in Italy.

A Horizon Beyond Borders

On especially clear mornings, the view extends far beyond Abruzzo itself. Looking north from Punta Aderci, you can admire the coastline stretching toward the neighboring Marche region, with the silhouette of the Sibillini Mountains and, in the distance, the dramatic profile of Mount Conero.

It is one of those rare places where the grandeur of Italy’s mountains meets the endless blue of the sea.

A Landscape Shaped by Nature and Tradition

Reaching the shoreline means crossing a landscape that changes color throughout the year. Punta Aderci is surrounded by traditional farms and vineyards that tell the story of the food and wine that have shaped life in Abruzzo for generations.

Golden Wheat Fields

Golden wheat fields sway in the sea breeze along the cliffs. These simple grains eventually become the ultra-fresh flour used for our bread, pizza, and beloved pasta alla chitarra.

Vineyards and Ancient Olive Trees

Rows of Montepulciano d’Abruzzo and Trebbiano vines grow alongside centuries-old olive trees. These are the proud roots of our local wines and extra virgin olive oil, both essential to family life and local traditions.

Summer Sunflowers

During the summer months, vibrant sunflower fields turn toward the sun, creating a spectacular contrast against the deep blue waters of the Adriatic.

Where Earth meets the Sea: sand and pebbles

As you follow the paths down toward the coast, Punta Aderci reveals the stunning variety of its shoreline, where different landscapes unfold side-by-side,
offering the chance to swim in crystal-clear waters and enjoy recreational activities such as canoeing.

The Soft Golden Dunes

In some areas, the reserve welcomes you with gently rolling sand dunes and wide, golden beaches like Punta Penna. This soft sand is perfect for a leisurely walk, allowing you to feel the warmth of the sun and the soft sea breeze as you listen to the gentle lap of the waves.

The Hidden Pebble Coves

Just a short distance away, the landscape shifts dramatically into quiet, intimate coves shaped by smooth white pebbles. These pebbles, polished over centuries by the Adriatic, create a satisfying crunch beneath your feet and keep the water remarkably transparent. It is an absolute paradise for swimming and snorkeling, offering a level of clarity where you can watch the marine life darting across the seabed below.

Birdwatchers are often delighted by the many rare species that inhabit the reserve, while nature lovers appreciate the sense of tranquility that feels increasingly rare in today’s world.

The timeless Trabocchi

Standing along the coast are the trabocchi, the iconic wooden fishing platforms that have become symbols of Abruzzo.

Built centuries ago from wood and local materials, these remarkable structures allowed fishermen to harvest the sea without ever venturing too far into open water. Today, they remain the silent guardians of the coastline and a beautiful testament to the ingenuity and traditions passed down through generations, famously celebrated in the writings of authors such as Gabriele D’Annunzio.

Many visitors are drawn to the unique experience of dining on a trabocco, enjoying freshly prepared seafood while listening to the gentle rhythm of the waves beneath their feet. It is a moment that feels suspended in time, where land and sea meet in the most intimate way.

On our tours, this is consistently one of the experiences guests remember most vividly, not only for the incredible food and setting, but for the distinct feeling of being completely immersed in the Adriatic landscape.

The magic of sunrise and sunset

If there is one piece of advice I always give, it is this: try to experience Punta Aderci during one of nature’s daily transitions.

Because of the unique shape of the Gulf of Vasto, the sunrises here are truly extraordinary. Watching the first light emerge from the Adriatic Sea and slowly paint the sky with shades of pink and gold is a sight that never loses its magic.

In the evening, as the sun disappears behind the Apennine mountains, a warm glow settles over the trabocchi and the sea becomes calm and peaceful. There is a quiet beauty in those moments that invites you to slow down and appreciate life’s simple pleasures.

Perhaps that is why I find myself returning here again and again.

In today’s busy world, places like Punta Aderci feel increasingly rare. Here, life still beautifully follows the rhythm of the seasons, vineyards stretch toward the sea, fishermen continue traditions handed down through generations, and every sunset seems to encourage us to pause and simply enjoy the moment.

It is this exact feeling slow, genuine, and deeply connected to nature that we love sharing with our guests. And perhaps that is why so many visitors leave Abruzzo with a little piece of their heart still here.

I hope one day you’ll have the opportunity to experience this special corner of Abruzzo with us.
